Il se murmure que Xray sortirai une 12e prochainement. Celle-ci pourrait faire son apparition lors de la prochaine grande manifestation nord-américaine qu'est la International Indoor Championship à Las Vegas

A voir ce qu'il en sera mais dans le domaine, deux grandes écoles s'affrontent, les voitures équipées d'une barre en T du type AE RC12L4, CRC T-Fource, Corally SP12X et les voitures à biellettes du genre CRC Generation X principalement. Quelle école choisira Xray? L'information de la conception d'une 12e n'a pas été démentie et cela revet donc du très probable compte-tenu du regain de popularité de la discipline outre-atlantique.

Chassis

CNC-machined chassis is custom-manufactured from 2.0mm high-grade graphite material with a specially-designed compound for carpet racing and asphalt racing. For extra-high grip carpet tracks, an optional stiff chassis will be available. Chassis layout is optimally designed to provide proper stiffness for excellent handling, while being flexible enough to generate best grip and traction. Adjustable Reactive Caster

Rumours about a possible 1/12 scale on-road car from Slovakian manufacturer Xray had been around for a while now but it was at last years on-road World Championship in Thailand when the first prototype cars hit the public road.

Pictures of the XII named car have been rare before the actual event although some spy shots floated around the internet showing that the first ever 1/12 scale car from Xray was very likely of a conventional ‘T-bar’ design with a rather large and ‘brushless-friendly’ power pod. Come the WC the secret was revealed and Xray factory driver Teemo Leino set some very impressive practice times with the orange toned XII. Information on a release date had not been given at that time but rumour had it that the pan car was due to be production ready by the beginning of 2009.

In the meantime everybody focused on the new Xray T2 ‘009 touring car (expect a review on Red RC very soon!) and we forgot a bit about the XII. How could we dare? Just in time before Christmas a small parcel from Slovakia arrived at the Red RC office containing nothing less than one of the brand new XII from Xray.

Silver is the new orange

Although the prototypes sport orange anodized aluminium parts the production XII comes in with natural and black anodised parts. Most of the alloy parts like the steering turnbuckles, servo hold-down washers, friction damper post, parts of the damper and power pod brace are silver coloured whereas the two side plates of the motor pod are black anodised. This combination makes for a very clean and ‘Xray-ish’ (read: technical) look compared to the prototype cars.

Front

The front of the XII is dominated by the reactive caster front-end with adjustable caster angles of 2.5°, 5.0° or 7.5°. This is done by eccentric bushings in the vertical brackets for the upper wishbones. These can additionally moved back and forth giving a total caster between 1° and 14.5°. If you use a ball-type Allen wrench you can easily adjust the reactive caster without the need to strip down the whole ensemble.

As usual with most of the modern 1/12 scale cars ride height can be adjusted via shims under the lower wishbones and/or the steering knuckles. The manual as well as the additional set-up booklet offer good information on the different set-up possibilities. The basic set-up suggestions regard to medium sized tyres and proved to be ok on our rather bumpy test track.

Middle

Moving to the middle of the chassis we pass the supplied servo saver that offers different mounting holes for the steering ball joints to adjust the Ackermann angle of the steering. Supplied with the kit is also a small bag of shims to fine tune the steering department. The servo saver is free of slop and usable for all common types of micro and mini servos thanks to different sized inserts.

The servo itself is mounted in composite servo posts that anchor in the carbon chassis. The chassis plate feature two different mounting positions. One for micro and one for medium sized servos. The positions differ by 4mm so you should be able to use most of the current ‘1/12 scale’ servos from KO Propo, JR/Graupner and others. With the JR/Graupner DS3781 we where lucky to see that the servo arm located in the middle of the chassis just perfect.

Leaving the steering assembly behind we come to the integral part of every on-road pan car: the T-bar. Having its roots in the early days of electric on-road racing the T-bar is still the most popular method of controlling the roll of a pan car chassis. Ok, to be honest: It seems that the link chassis cars become more and more popular but we come back to that when we get our hands on one!

Xray XII 1/12th scale

Back to the XII. The T-bar is made out of 1.5mm thin glass fibre and is called the ‘wide’ carpet spec version. Knowing Xray we are sure asphalt spec versions etc. will follow soon to help adjusting the XII to any kind of track and driving style. The T-bar is equipped with two different locations holes for the tweak screws to allow for an easy adjustment of the hardness of the item. Screwing the grub screws in the front holes makes for a softer feeling T-bar (and an easier to drive car), the rear location holes give a harder T-bar and thus a more responsible ride.

As a very unique feature the XII offers a ‘Club Racing’ option for the T-bar assembly. This is in fact a plastic part that is used instead of the front pivot ball making it nearly impossible to build the car with a ‘tweaked’ T-bar because the usually used tweak screws to not come into play. We haven’t used this option yet but believe that it could be a nice feature for part time racers as tweaking a car can be time consuming and sometimes frustrating …

Above the T-Bar the oil filled damper can be found. It features an all alloy shock body, volume compensation and a two hole shock piston. Supplied in the kit is a rather soft shock spring (13mm diameter) and 350cst oil. Spring preload as well as droop can be adjusted via knurled nuts.

Rear

The rear end of the XII is equipped with a friction damper to control the chassis roll. Stiffness of the assembly can be controlled by different greases or different amounts of greases as they lock up the movement of the carbon plate that is sandwiched by the two plastic friction plates. Both of the plates show a groove in their contact surface where the grease can be filled in. Xray advises to use differential grease but we opted for hard Corally damper syrup.

The power pod consists of two alloy side plates that are screwed to a carbon plate that attaches to the fibreglass T-bar. An alloy rod stiffens up the whole assembly. Xray was wise enough to separate the side plates as far as possible to allow for enough room for the protruding brushless motors and the often needed sensor cables.

Ride height up rear can be adjusted via five different ride height adjusters with 0 to 2mm offset. Worth mentioning is that the rear track wide can be adjusted by shims of different thicknesses to compensate the different offset rims or tweak the rear end grip.

The ball differential of the XII sports 12 carbide balls a carbide thrust bearing and is one of the smoothest differentials we have ever seen in a 1/12 scale car!

Finish

A high performance car needs high performance equipment so we used a GM-Racing Genius 95 1/12 Spec speedo, 5.5T GM-Racing Evo III motor and Orcan VTEC 4600 cells to power the XII. In charge steering duties is a JR/Graupner DS3781 servo connected to a Spektrum SR-3500 receiver. Sidebite and traction are provided by Xceed purple/lilac tryes up front, pinks up rear treated with odourless Corally ‘Jack the gripper’ traction compound. Downforce is generated by a BlackArt Audi R10 body that is out of production now and replaced by the new BlackArt Pacemaker (#BA003).

Track test

For a first test of the Xray XII we headed to a small indoor track near Hamburg/Germany that offers a high grip but rather bumpy carpet surface. Not the best place for a new car but with the racing season still in hibernation it was the only possibility to test the new car.

After the first couple of laps we noticed that we had to raise the height of the body which was no problem on the front but on the rear of the chassis. Since we already used the topmost position of the body posts we had to add some spacers underneath them to properly raise the body. Maybe its just a problem with the BlackArt R8 but since did not try a different body, we don’t know!

After lifting the Audi shell we went back to the track finding that the damping of the friction damper was a bit on the heavy side for such a bumpy track. What seemed ok on the workbench proofed to be quite a handful on the track. The rear of the car was a bit unpredictable as it stepped out in more than one corner. Back on our pit table we released the damper plates from the sticky Corally damper syrup and added a fair amount of Xray differential grease. The result was a much freer rear end. While working on the back of the car we fitted a milder Speed Passion 9.5T Ultra Sportsman Series motor to replace the GM-Racing 5.5T power mill that proved to be much too powerful for track and driver! With a rollout of around 48.7mm the XII was a bit on the slow side so for the next time out we make sure we have large enough pinions on board to gear in the 50 to 52mm range!

Back on the track the XII seemed transformed. With pink Xceed tyres on the rear and purple Xceed tyres up front the XII had a massive amount of steering but was still very controllable after we dialed out some steering throw.

The next thing to take care of was the to get rid of a bit of steering on the turn in of the slow and medium corners. At first, we tried to increase the caster angle by spacing the upper arms of the front suspension to the rear by about half a Millimeter but that did not cure the problem. Instead we went back to the factory setting and decreased the angle of the reactive caster from 5° to 2.5° by using the offset insert mounted with the whole in the low position. To receive (nearly) the same overall caster we had to space the upper arms 2+1mm on the front of the arm and 0.5mm on the rear making 7.5° in total (compared to the previous 7°). This change made a huge difference. The car was easier to drive but still had enough bite for a quick corner entry. The last tiny change we did was to increase the preload of the shock to raise the middle ride height a bit as it seemed the chassis bottomed out on one or the other bump.

Conclusion

The Xray XII is a really nice piece of kit. It combines high parts quality, a great finish and high performance. We only had limited track time with the car so far but nothing broke or showed excessive slop (beside the steering knuckles) and look forward to use it on regional races here in Northern Germany during the winter – watch this space!

Performance Tips

> It is important to use a good thread lock on all fasteners that screw into metal. This especially applies to the M3×14 screw that holds the friction damper post. Ours came loose during a run resulting in a very unpredictable car.

> Only use a small amount of differential grease on the large diff balls. Too much grease attracts dirt and carpet fluff. We also used Associated Black Grease on the small thrust bearing.

> Make sure your car is carefully tweaked as explained in the manual. Otherwise the fun of driving a 1/12 scale car will tend to be zero!

Pour le moment je suis dans la phase de montage mais je voulai mettre la barre anti-roulis en option dessus car la barre carbone , je ne trouvai pas ça top .
