Features

Weight Relocation • One of the things that made the biggest changes in the RC8B's dynamic is weight distribution. A simple rule is the more weight you put up front the more aggressively it handles. The newly redesigned radio tray moved the battery up toward the front and the result is a more aggressive and controllable steering feel.

BIG Shocks • One of the options missing from the previous kit, but available as an upgrade, was the new big bore 16 mm shocks. As many companies found the larger shock bodies offered better consistency and handling in the grueling conditions of racing.

CF out AL in • Many RC8 racers probably had most of these upgrades already. The Team has been testing these parts for a while, but it was never in one kit. So the new suspension geometry and the aluminum pivot blocks all come standard. That goes for the aluminum shock mounts, which are a stout 5 mm thick and have new shock hold locations.

1. Transponder Mount — Both a personal transponder and the regular ones have a place to sit.

2. Pre Assembled — Lots of parts like the diffs and shocks come pre-assembled to speed up the built time.

3. Camber Link Redo — Easier to adjust and more durable front-camber link mounts.

4. RC8B talk Ti — No skimping on turnbuckles; they are titanium.

5. Big Box — Sometimes companies make electronics compartments too small, but it's not the case with the RC8B. You get plenty of room for your RX of choice.

6. New Rack — A revised steering rack gives you less bump steer.

7. Free Floating Brake Calipers — No unwanted drag.

Testing

I headed up to my favorite track in the area, Thunder Alley, in Beaumont, Calif., for a day of testing. I had been running the previous car for a season and I'm pretty familiar with how the car handled so it would make for a good comparison. Thunder Alley has some of the best layouts for testing in the country and it really tests the cars handling ability. This layout was a very technical layout riddled with jumps and the traction varied from high when wet to low when dusty.

Acceleration and Speed • The new Reedy engine puts out a decent amount of power, more than most will be able to put down to perfection. The combination with the AE-2035 pipe and clutch setup felt great. The RC8B hits hard off the line, and it doesn't do anything strange when accelerating. Speed was pretty darn good for the straights.

Rating: 9/9

Braking • This part is always more complicated and harder to get right than people think. Getting the right bias and feel isn't something that you just set up in the pits. So once you get everything set right the RC8Bs, brakes work to perfection with little drama. They are pretty easy to adjust and hold their setting pretty well.

Rating: 9

Low-Speed • The RC8B never had any issues with low speed handling. The revision to the geometry and weight distribution added a little bit better response and a lot better "feel" to the car. It now feels aggressive, but not too aggressive where it bites your hand off. The rear end behaves much better now, but seemed to side step over some strange ruts.

Rating: 9.5

High-Speed Handling • Hammer down on the throttle and the Reedy engine gets happy. The RC8B was also happy, and its new shocks's ability to handle the chop made it pretty easy to stay in control. This was the box setup and even without any changes the RC8B felt right.

Rating: 9.5

Rough-Track Handling • It's getting harder and harder to say if a buggy does this well because most of the top-level buggies are starting to be too good. Luckily us mortals never have to worry about that, but it's good to know that the geometrical revisions made the car handle the rough stuff better. Since most 1/8-scale racing is done on some blown-out tracks, this becomes one of the must important handling areas. The RC8B now does it better than before. I did notice that in some corners that a rut would catch the car off guard and kick the rear out, but tires might have been more of the issue than the car with that.

Rating: 9.5

Jumping • The RC8B heads for the clouds with complete confidence and control. The snappy acceleration means you can clear the tougher sections easier. Once in the air the buggy behaves well and you can correct the attitude with the standard brake/throttle inputs. Landing is something that seems to have improved as well. There's less of a stiff smack when you flat land jumps.

Rating: 9.5

Wrenching

Maintenance • Working on any AE product seems to be easy. A lot of thought went into the design and layout of the car and that holds true for maintenance as well. Most of the "major" service areas are accessible by about four screws and thankfully the car only uses a few hex sizes so you'll only need a 2 mm or 2.5 mm wrench. We also love that AE switched to metric screws. Makes everything much easier.

Rating: 10

Wear and Tear • Every vehicle has points that wear or break, and the RC8B will be no different. That's not to say AE didn't take customer feedback and address the previous version's weaker points. You'll see that most of the stress points now have aluminum and things have been redesigned or strengthened to provide better durability. I'm slightly out of my "race practice," so it does take me longer to get my timing and rhythm going so I'll case, lawn dart, and honestly blow out much more than I normally would. It's not good for my pride, but it does show that the car can take an ass-kicking and keep going. The one thing that broke? I stripped a collar trying to adjust my rear brakes! I'll take that as damage anyday.

Rating: 10

Tuning • This version of the car includes many tuning options that you may not want to use. I stuck with the stock setup and compared it to what the current setup was and made any changes the team guys had different. AE has a Web site with all those current setup sheets, but my advice is drive the car first and get used to it. Don't change everything every run.

Rating: 10

Conclusion

AE continues to impress me with their vehicles. Not only are they tops in the class, they offer an incredible value. This fully loaded factory team edition is about $500 and you get a lot of kit for that. Material quality, handling, good parts and team support all equal an incredible car. It's not hard to see why AE is one of the best brands in the business.
